18/06/2026

A packed day of news has seen major developments across crime, politics, defence, sport, and public safety. Courtrooms across the UK have delivered significant sentences, international tensions continue to shape foreign policy, and communities from Cardiff to Cambridgeshire are dealing with serious local incidents. Today’s round-up brings together the key stories in full.

UK NEWS

🕵️ Chinese Spy Ring Jailed in Major National Security Case

A Border Force officer and his handler have been jailed at the Old Bailey for spying on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists living in the UK on behalf of Chinese intelligence-linked contacts.

Chi Leung “Peter” Wai used his position inside the Home Office system to access sensitive immigration data, tracking dissidents and passing information to his contacts. Prosecutors told the court this amounted to a “shadow surveillance network operating within the British state”.

Wai was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assisting a foreign intelligence service and misconduct in public office, while Chung Biu “Bill” Yuen received 8 years for his role coordinating with Chinese-linked officials.

The judge warned the men that their actions “threatened the sovereignty of the United Kingdom”, while security officials said the case exposed how foreign states are attempting to operate covertly inside Britain using insiders and digital systems.

Counter-terrorism police confirmed that over 20 terabytes of evidence were reviewed, including encrypted messages and financial records across multiple countries.

⚖️ Ely Riots Sentencing: Further Defendants Jailed

More defendants have been sentenced for their roles in the Ely riots, which erupted after the deaths of teenagers Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans in 2023.

The court heard how around 150 people gathered in Cardiff, with tensions escalating into large-scale violence involving missiles, fires, and attacks on police officers. Officers were injured during prolonged disorder across Ely and surrounding areas.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke told the court that the violence had caused “serious harm to community trust and policing relationships”.

Some defendants received prison sentences of up to six years, while others were given community orders depending on age, remorse, and involvement levels.

Further hearings are expected as sentencing continues for remaining individuals.

🧑‍⚖️ Crime Boss Steven Lyons Loses Extradition Appeal

Scottish organised crime figure Steven Lyons has lost his legal challenge against extradition from the Netherlands to Spain.

Lyons, accused of leading a major drug trafficking and money laundering network across Europe and the Middle East, is now expected to face trial in Spain under a European Arrest Warrant.

Spanish authorities allege his organisation operated shell companies and crypto-based laundering systems moving millions of euros in drug profits.

The court ruled there was no evidence Lyons would not receive a fair trial and rejected claims of procedural irregularities.

Police say the case is part of a wider crackdown on “transnational criminal empires” operating across Europe.

✈️ Body Found in Plane Landing Gear at Gatwick Airport

A major investigation has been launched after a man’s body was discovered inside the landing gear of an Air Arabia flight arriving from Morocco.

Emergency services were called after ground staff made the discovery shortly after landing at Gatwick Airport.

Authorities believe the man may have been a stowaway, but investigations are ongoing to determine how he accessed the aircraft and where the breach occurred.

Aviation experts say such incidents are extremely rare but almost always fatal due to freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen at high altitude.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about airport perimeter security at international departure points.

🐊 Boy Critically Injured in Crocodile Enclosure Incident

A 3-year-old boy remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries at Johnsons Zoo in Cambridgeshire after entering a crocodile enclosure.

Police confirmed a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Officers are investigating whether the child was placed in the enclosure or entered it in another way.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, attended the scene as zoo staff attempted to secure the area.

The zoo has described the incident as “deeply distressing” and has closed the enclosure pending investigation.

Detectives are also reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses as part of a major safeguarding inquiry.

🛍️ MPs Debate Rising Abuse of Retail Workers

MPs in Westminster have heard emotional testimony from shop workers describing escalating abuse, threats, and violence in customer-facing roles.

One worker told MPs she was racially abused and threatened with harm to her children after simply offering customer assistance.

Other MPs described cases of shop staff being followed home, attacked with objects, and in extreme cases assaulted with weapons.

The Crime and Policing Act 2026 now makes assaulting a retail worker a standalone offence punishable by up to six months in prison.

However, unions are calling for stronger sentencing and expansion of protections to cover hospitality, rail, and banking staff.

The Home Office says it is monitoring early results of the law before considering expansion.

🏛️ POLITICS & DEFENCE

🪖 Defence Secretary Working “Around the Clock” on Military Plan

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis has said he is working “around the clock” to finalise the UK’s delayed defence investment plan amid growing pressure from NATO allies.

The plan, delayed after the resignation of his predecessor, is expected to set long-term military funding targets.

Current projections suggest UK defence spending may rise to 2.68% of GDP by 2030, below the 3% target many military leaders argue is necessary.

Senior defence figures warn that without extra funding, training and operational readiness could be reduced.

NATO leaders and the US Defence Secretary have both urged allies to provide “credible, concrete” spending plans ahead of a July summit.

Welsh Government Meeting with PM Delayed

A planned June meeting between the UK Prime Minister and Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has not taken place.

Both sides have blamed scheduling issues, with Cardiff Bay expressing frustration at delays following a historic political shift in Wales.

The Welsh Government says it wants urgent talks on funding, rail powers, policing, and welfare devolution.

Downing Street insists it remains committed to meeting devolved leaders “as soon as diaries allow”.

Tensions remain high following differing interpretations of earlier discussions on devolution and constitutional reform.

🌍 WORLD NEWS

Travel Restrictions on Dubai Lifted

The UK Foreign Office has removed its “do not travel” warning for Dubai following a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran.

While the change will allow insurance coverage to resume for travellers, officials warn the region remains unstable.

Airlines are still cautious, with some suspending flights until late 2026 or 2027 due to ongoing security risks.

Tourism experts say the decision could revive travel demand, especially during peak summer season.

🪖 NATO Pressures Members Over Defence Spending

At a major defence summit in Brussels, NATO leaders urged member states to increase military spending significantly.

The US Defence Secretary warned that countries failing to meet targets could see reduced support.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called for “clear and credible plans” to reach spending levels of up to 5% of GDP by 2035.

The summit highlighted growing divisions over burden-sharing within the alliance.
