WALES & UK NEWS

🚨 Cockett Women's Centre Remains Empty Four Years After Approval

One of Swansea's most controversial developments remains at a standstill, despite being approved nearly three years ago.

The Swansea Residential Women's Centre, planned for the former Trehafod building in Cockett, was originally intended to open in 2024 as an alternative to short prison sentences for women. The facility would have accommodated up to 12 women at a time, providing support, rehabilitation and community-based sentencing options.

The project faced fierce opposition from local residents from the moment it was announced in 2022. More than 215 objections were lodged, with concerns ranging from public safety and traffic issues to fears about the impact on the local community.

Although Swansea Council initially rejected the plans, the Ministry of Justice successfully appealed the decision and planning permission was granted in 2023.

However, despite the legal victory, funding for the project was later withdrawn. A new report from the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee has criticised ministers for failing to provide any certainty over the future of the centre.

The committee described the delays as "unacceptable" and warned that Wales continues to lack suitable alternatives to imprisonment for female offenders.

Supporters argue that women sentenced to short prison terms often lose their homes, employment and family connections, making rehabilitation harder. Opponents maintain that local residents' concerns were ignored from the outset.

For now, the site remains boarded up and unused.

🚔 Record £139 Million Cannabis Seizure Leads to South Wales Arrests

Three South Wales residents have been arrested following what authorities describe as the largest cannabis seizure in British history.

Border Force officers intercepted 12 tonnes of cannabis concealed within a shipment arriving at Southampton Docks. The drugs, believed to have originated in Canada, carried an estimated street value of £139 million.

The operation began after intelligence was received from the Canada Border Services Agency, prompting a coordinated investigation involving Border Force, South Wales Police, Gwent Police and the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit.

Raids were subsequently carried out at properties in Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale and Abertillery.

Police say the seizure has prevented huge sums of money from reaching organised crime groups.

Acting Inspector Stuart Cumine said the operation demonstrated how international cooperation remains vital in tackling drug trafficking networks.

Investigations remain ongoing.

⚠️ Travel Warning Ahead of IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea

With less than a month until IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea returns, residents are being urged to prepare for significant travel disruption.

The event, now sold out, will bring thousands of athletes and spectators to Swansea on Sunday 12th July.

The race includes a swim in Swansea Bay, a cycling route through Gower and a half-marathon run through the city centre.

Organisers estimate the event generates approximately £4.5 million for the local economy each year.

Road closures will affect large parts of Swansea, Mumbles, Gower and surrounding communities throughout the day.

Swansea Council says every effort will be made to minimise disruption, while residents are being encouraged to plan journeys in advance.

🚨 Serious Incident Leaves Man Dead and Woman in Hospital

Police investigations continue following a serious incident in Merthyr Tydfil.

A 36-year-old woman was taken to hospital after a serious assault in Penydarren shortly before midnight.

Several hours later, the body of a 39-year-old man was discovered at Pontsticill Reservoir within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

South Wales Police say they are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

Local residents have expressed shock at the events, with forensic officers continuing to examine the scene.

🍺 Calls for Alcohol Licence to Be Revoked

A lengthy investigation into an Ebbw Vale off-licence has uncovered alleged sales of alcohol to children.

Gwent Police and Trading Standards officers are now calling for Bargain Beer to lose its alcohol licence after evidence emerged of underage sales.

Investigators claim children as young as 13 and 14 purchased alcohol from the premises.

The council's licensing committee will decide whether the shop should lose its licence altogether or be subjected to strict new operating conditions.

⚖️ Drug Dealer Given Final Opportunity

Martin O'Reilly from Clydach has been warned he faces prison unless he completes community service requirements imposed as part of a suspended sentence.

O'Reilly had been ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work after being convicted of possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

However, the court heard he had completed just over two hours.

A judge described his compliance as wholly unacceptable and deferred further action for 12 weeks, giving him one final opportunity to avoid imprisonment.

🌍 WORLD NEWS

Russian Frigate Fires Warning Shots Near British Yacht

A potentially serious maritime incident unfolded in the English Channel today after Russian warship Admiral Grigorovich reportedly fired warning shots near a British-registered yacht.

The yacht had apparently drifted close to the Russian vessel in foggy conditions approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight.

Russian sailors first issued audible warnings before firing warning shots.

No injuries or damage were reported.

British authorities are now investigating the incident while Royal Navy vessels continue monitoring Russian naval activity in the Channel.

The event comes amid increasingly strained relations between Britain and Russia following recent sanctions and military support for Ukraine.

Hungary Limits Future Prime Ministers

Hungary's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment limiting future prime ministers to two terms in office.

The move prevents former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from returning to office after serving sixteen consecutive years before losing power earlier this year.

Current Prime Minister Péter Magyar argued the reform would strengthen democracy and prevent excessive concentration of political power.

Orbán's supporters have condemned the decision, claiming it unfairly targets the former leader.

Eight Killed in B-52 Bomber Crash

Eight people have died after a United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after take-off from Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The aircraft was conducting a routine test flight when it suffered a catastrophic accident moments after becoming airborne.

Those killed included military personnel, civilian government employees and two Boeing contractors.

The B-52 remains one of the most iconic aircraft in military aviation and has served continuously since the 1950s.

An extensive investigation has now begun.

Starmer and Trump Attempt Diplomatic Reset

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump met face-to-face at the G7 Summit in France.

The meeting follows months of diplomatic tensions surrounding military action against Iran and disagreements over Britain's refusal to permit American strikes from UK territory.

Both leaders described discussions as constructive.

Starmer also announced a fresh package of 70 sanctions targeting Russia's military-industrial complex.

⚽ FIFA WORLD CUP 2026

🇦🇷 Argentina Begin Defence of Their Crown

Defending world champions Argentina begin their World Cup campaign tonight against Algeria.

Much attention surrounds captain Lionel Messi, who is managing a hamstring issue.

Manager Lionel Scaloni faces a difficult decision over how much to risk his star player in the opening fixture.

Norway Return to the World Stage

Norway begin their first World Cup campaign since 1998 when they face Iraq tonight.

The Scandinavian side are led by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal midfielder Martin Ødegaard.

Many football experts believe Norway could be one of the surprise packages of the tournament.

Uruguay's Chaotic Start

Uruguay endured a difficult build-up to their opening match after travel delays, paperwork issues and security checks disrupted preparations.

Despite the challenges, they secured a respectable 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.

Players were seen undergoing luggage inspections by US authorities just hours before kick-off.

🛍️ Poundstretcher Avoids Collapse

Discount retailer Poundstretcher has secured its future after a restructuring plan received court approval.

The company, which employs approximately 3,000 staff and operates more than 300 stores nationwide, had faced growing financial pressure.

Management says no stores will close and no redundancies are planned.
