Every day has its own place in history, and 10 August is no exception. From revolutions and scientific achievements to famous births and notable deaths, the date has been associated with events that have shaped politics, culture and the world we live in today.

Here are some of the key moments that happened on this day.

1792 – The Storming of the Tuileries Palace

One of the most significant events to take place on 10 August happened during the French Revolution.

In 1792, revolutionaries and armed insurgents stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, where King Louis XVI and his family were staying.

The violent uprising resulted in the effective suspension of the monarchy and became a major turning point in the French Revolution. The events eventually led to the abolition of the French monarchy and the establishment of the French Republic.

🚢 1628 – The Vasa sinks

On 10 August 1628, the Swedish warship Vasa set sail on its maiden voyage from Stockholm.

The enormous warship had travelled only a short distance when it began to heel over and sank in the harbour.

Around 30 people are believed to have died.

More than three centuries later, the remarkably preserved vessel was recovered from the seabed. Today, the Vasa is one of Sweden's most famous historical attractions.

🏛️ 1846 – Smithsonian Institution established

On this day in 1846, US President James K. Polk signed legislation establishing the Smithsonian Institution.

The organisation would go on to become one of the world's most important centres for research, science, history and culture.

Today, the Smithsonian operates a huge collection of museums, galleries and research facilities in the United States.

🌎 1944 – Guam recaptured

During the Second World War, US forces secured Guam from Japanese forces on 10 August 1944 after weeks of intense fighting.

The battle was part of the wider Allied campaign across the Pacific and helped strengthen America's position in the region.

Space exploration also features in the history of 10 August.

In 1990, NASA's Magellan spacecraft entered orbit around Venus.

The mission used radar to map the surface of Venus in unprecedented detail, helping scientists understand the planet's geology despite its thick cloud cover.
