A packed week across football, rugby, tennis, athletics, and global sport saw major transfers, emotional retirements, injury setbacks, and World Cup build-up drama. Here’s everything you need to know.
⚽ FOOTBALL – TRANSFER & WORLD CUP DRAMA
🔴 Konaté set to leave Liverpool on a free transfer
Liverpool are preparing for another major defensive departure, with Ibrahima Konaté expected to leave Anfield when his contract expires.
The 27-year-old France international joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 and has gone on to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. However, talks over a new deal broke down after months of negotiations.
Konaté had previously hinted he was close to an agreement, but a significant gap in valuation between player and club has now ended discussions.
Liverpool are unwilling to meet his wage demands as they continue restructuring under Arne Slot. The club already has defensive depth issues following injuries and other contract exits.
With Konaté now expected to leave on a free transfer, interest from top European clubs is expected to grow rapidly ahead of the summer window.
🔵 Barcelona agree £69m deal for Anthony Gordon
Barcelona have reportedly agreed a deal worth over £69m with Newcastle United for England winger Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers, scoring 17 goals this season and establishing himself as a key attacking threat.
Although Bayern Munich also showed interest, Barcelona moved fastest to secure an agreement. Gordon is expected to join up with England teammates ahead of World Cup preparations in the USA.
Newcastle will reinvest the fee into rebuilding their squad after a disappointing league finish, with club officials describing the deal as part of a “refresh cycle” for the squad.
🔵 Manchester City lead race for Elliot Anderson
Manchester City are reportedly ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
The 23-year-old England international has impressed this season and is now being considered one of the Premier League’s most valuable young midfielders.
Forest are reluctant to sell but may be forced into negotiations due to financial pressures following a mid-table finish and lack of European football.
The potential fee could break British transfer records, exceeding the £105m paid for Declan Rice.
United remain interested but are unwilling to engage in an inflated bidding war.
🌍 WORLD CUP NEWS
🇦🇷 Messi named in sixth World Cup squad
Lionel Messi will compete in his sixth FIFA World Cup after being named in Argentina’s squad for 2026.
The 39-year-old captain remains central to Argentina’s plans after leading them to World Cup glory in 2022.
Messi, who has 116 international goals, will become one of the most experienced World Cup players in history, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
Argentina enter the tournament as defending champions and will face Algeria, Austria, and Jordan in the group stage.
Despite fitness concerns at Inter Miami, Argentina’s coaching staff remain confident in his ability to lead the squad once again on the world stage.
🇦🇺 Volpato switches allegiance to Australia
Cristian Volpato has officially switched international allegiance from Italy to Australia ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The 22-year-old midfielder, formerly of AS Roma and Sassuolo, represented Italy at youth level but never played a senior competitive match.
Born in Sydney, Volpato is now expected to join Australia’s training camp in Los Angeles as manager Tony Popovic finalises his squad.
Australia see him as a major creative boost in midfield as they prepare for group-stage matches against Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay.
💰 FIFA ticket price controversy grows
FIFA is under investigation in the United States over allegations of inflated World Cup ticket pricing and misleading sales practices.
Authorities in New York and New Jersey claim supporters have faced “fake scarcity” tactics and unexpected price increases across multiple ticket phases.
Some matches, including high-demand fixtures, have seen price increases of over 30%.
FIFA has yet to respond publicly, but organisers insist demand for the tournament remains extremely high.
The investigation could have major implications for future World Cup ticketing structures.
🏉 RUGBY – WALES & CLUB MOVEMENTS
🏴 Wales stars take on coaching roles
Welsh internationals Callum Sheedy and Alun Lawrence have taken up coaching roles at Chew Valley RFC in England.
Sheedy will work as backs coach, while Lawrence becomes head coach as part of a wider restructuring at the club.
The move reflects a growing trend of Welsh players stepping into coaching roles while still connected to playing environments.
Meanwhile, Cardiff Rugby scrum-half Johan Mulder has signed a new long-term contract, strengthening the club’s spine ahead of next season.
🏉 Lloyd Williams set for emotional retirement
Wales Grand Slam winner Lloyd Williams will play the final match of his career in the Elior Champ Rugby final.
The 36-year-old scrum-half has earned 32 caps for Wales and won three Six Nations titles, establishing himself as one of the most respected players of his generation.
Williams has played a key role in Worcester Warriors’ remarkable resurgence after the club’s collapse in 2022.
He will retire after the final and move into a career in insurance broking.
🏉 WRU planning £28m overhaul
The Welsh Rugby Union is preparing a £28m investment plan aimed at transforming coaching and player development.
Technical director Rhys Long will lead the restructure, with a focus on long-term performance improvement.
Former Wales coaches including Dai Young, Stephen Jones, and Robin McBryde have been linked with potential returns to strengthen the national setup.
The WRU hopes the overhaul will rebuild competitiveness across both men’s and women’s rugby.
🏃 ATHLETICS – CONTROVERSY IN WALES
🇬🇧 Hannah Brier misses Commonwealth Games
Wales’ fastest-ever woman, Hannah Brier, has been ruled out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to selection timing rules.
Brier recently broke a 44-year national record in the 200m but missed the qualification deadline by just eight days.
She described the situation as “crazy”, highlighting frustration over inconsistent selection windows across UK nations.
Welsh Athletics has backed her concerns, arguing that deadlines are set too early for track athletes to peak.
🎾 TENNIS – FRENCH OPEN DRAMA
🎾 Sinner crashes out in shock French Open defeat
World number one Jannik Sinner suffered a stunning second-round exit at the French Open after a five-set collapse against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.
Sinner had been two sets up and in full control before physical exhaustion and illness changed the match completely.
He reportedly experienced dizziness and nausea in extreme heat conditions reaching over 34°C.
The defeat ends his 30-match winning streak and opens up the men’s draw significantly.
🎾 Wawrinka emotional final French Open
Stan Wawrinka is playing his final French Open after confirming his retirement plans for the end of the season.
The 2015 champion pushed through a dramatic early-round battle but is nearing the end of his career.
Fans have paid emotional tribute to the Swiss veteran, who has been a major figure in modern tennis.
🏇 HORSE RACING – DISCIPLINARY ACTION
🐎 Bowen training team fined after rule breaches
Peter and Mickey Bowen have been fined £5,000 after two horses tested positive for banned substances.
Flying Fortune was stripped of a Grade 2 win, while Olivers Travels was disqualified from a Worcester race.
The British Horseracing Authority confirmed penalties for both drug violations and record-keeping failures.
