The summer box office is showing plenty of life, but there is still one superhero standing firmly above the competition.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has continued its extraordinary run at the top of the North American box office, taking an estimated $70 million during its third weekend in cinemas.

That pushes its domestic total to an incredible $785.8 million, making it the fourth-biggest domestic release ever. Even more impressively, the Sony Pictures blockbuster has now passed the $2 billion mark worldwide, joining a very exclusive group of films to reach that milestone.

The movie achieved the global figure in around 18 days, putting it among the fastest films ever to cross $2 billion.

For comparison, Avengers: Endgame reached the same milestone in just 11 days — meaning Spider-Man has not quite matched Marvel's record, but its performance remains spectacular.

🕷️ Spider-Man's box-office web gets bigger

The success of Brand New Day shows just how powerful the Spider-Man name remains with audiences.

Three weekends into its theatrical run, the film continues to attract huge crowds despite having already generated hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales.

International audiences have also been turning out in force, contributing a further $118.7 million during the latest reporting period.

With the domestic total approaching $800 million and the worldwide figure already beyond $2 billion, the big question now is how high Spider-Man can climb before its theatrical run finally slows down.

⚔️ The Odyssey remains firmly in second

While Spider-Man continues to dominate, The Odyssey is also proving to be a major theatrical success.

Christopher Nolan's epic remained in second place with an estimated $23.2 million for the weekend.

Its North American total has now reached approximately $504.7 million, while international markets have added another $98 million.

The movie has now crossed $1.2 billion worldwide, giving Nolan another major global hit.

China has also provided a significant boost, with the film taking around $36.6 million during its opening days there.

That means the top two films are comfortably ahead of the rest of

the weekend's releases.

🦖 Two dinosaur films fight for third

The most interesting battle further down the chart came between two completely different films featuring dinosaurs.

On one side was Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, aimed primarily at younger audiences and families.

On the other was The End of Oak Street, an original PG-13 action film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.

The two releases were separated by only around half a million dollars.

The End of Oak Street narrowly took third place with approximately $21 million, while Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie followed with $20.5 million.

It was a surprisingly close contest between a family animation and an original live-action movie.

🏙️ The End of Oak Street beats expectations

The End of Oak Street performed better than expected in its opening weekend.

The film opened across 3,446 North American locations, generating around $21 million domestically.

Internationally, it added another $26 million, giving the movie a worldwide opening of approximately $47 million.

With a reported production budget of around $80 million, the film still has work to do before it becomes a major theatrical success, but its opening is an encouraging start.

The film has also attracted a strong critical response, currently sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Audience reaction has been more mixed, however, with the movie receiving a B CinemaScore.

🐾 Paw Patrol brings families to cinemas

The other dinosaur contender, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, opened in 3,545 cinemas across the United States and Canada.

The third theatrically released Paw Patrol film since 2021, it appears to have connected strongly with its core family audience.

Its opening audience awarded the movie an A CinemaScore, suggesting strong word of mouth among families.

The film has also performed internationally, taking its current worldwide total to around $69 million.

While it could not quite defeat The End of Oak Street for third place, the result demonstrates the continued strength of the Paw Patrol brand.

🎤 Katseye lands in the top five

The Katseye: Wild Hearts documentary also made an impressive impact despite playing on far fewer screens.

The film earned approximately $4 million from just 724 cinemas, enough to secure fifth place.

Several other new releases also managed to enter the top ten, including Six: The Musical Live, which opened with around $3 million.

The Brink of War followed with approximately $2.7 million.

The Tamil-language romance Vishwanath & Sons rounded out the top ten with around $1.6 million.

🎬 More films making noise

Not every new release managed to break into the top ten.

The Matthew McConaughey crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King opened with just over $1 million from 632 cinemas.

Meanwhile, the young Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony earned around $706,676 from only 37 cinemas during its second weekend.

The A24 release is expected to expand into more cinemas in the coming weeks, meaning its box-office story is far from finished.

💰 Summer box office remains strong

Despite concerns about cinema attendance in recent years, the wider summer movie season has produced encouraging numbers.

The summer has generated more than $4.2 billion in North American ticket sales, putting it approximately 5.7% ahead of the comparable pre-pandemic summer of 2019.

That figure leaves the current summer only around $130 million behind the record summer of 2013.

That year eventually finished just below $4.8 billion, helped by blockbusters including Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2.

Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian believes the current summer is on course to rank among the top five summers of all time.

The overall 2026 box office has now reached almost $6.9 billion, another encouraging sign for the cinema industry.

🎥 The Bong Games News verdict

It is shaping up to be a fascinating summer at the cinema.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is operating on an entirely different level, while The Odyssey continues to demonstrate the power of a major filmmaker and a huge theatrical spectacle.

But the battle between The End of Oak Street and Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie proves that there is still plenty of room for different types of films to find audiences.

With billions already flowing through cinemas this summer, the big-screen experience appears to be fighting back.

What do you think — is Spider-Man's $2 billion-plus run unstoppable, or can another blockbuster eventually knock it from the top spot?
