Murder Probe Launched After Two People Die in Grangetown House Fire

A murder investigation has been launched after two people died following a house fire in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called shortly before 05:30 BST after a fire broke out at a property in the area. Two people died in the blaze, while four others were taken to hospital for treatment.

A woman remains in a critical condition, while three other people suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Cleveland Police said officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths and were keeping an open mind. The force said it could not currently rule out possible links to wider organised crime.

A large emergency response was launched, with Cleveland Fire Brigade sending six fire engines and an Incident Command Unit to the scene. The fire caused extensive damage to the property, with the roof collapsing and wooden support beams left exposed.

Police have increased patrols in the area as the investigation continues, saying the additional presence is intended to reassure residents following the tragic incident.

Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander Supt Emily Harrison said officers were working to establish exactly what had happened.

She said the force would maintain a high-visibility presence in Grangetown while the investigation progresses and to provide reassurance to the local community.

Road closures were put in place around the scene, with the fire brigade asking members of the public to avoid the area where possible.

Community urged not to speculate

The deaths come after a difficult period for communities in the wider Middlesbrough and Redcar area. The fire occurred around two miles from the scene of a major A66 crash on Saturday that killed five young men and two police officers.

Redcar MP Anna Turley described the latest incident as devastating and offered her condolences to the families and friends of those who died, while also expressing her support for those receiving hospital treatment.

Grangetown councillor Adam Brook urged residents not to speculate about the circumstances of the fire or share unconfirmed information.

The families of those involved have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
