The European football season continued to provide plenty of talking points on Saturday, with big clubs across England, Spain, Italy and France taking centre stage.

There was a winning start for Inter Milan as they began their Serie A title defence, while José Mourinho returned to the Real Madrid dugout for his first match since taking charge again.

In England, however, it was a very different story for Manchester United, who suffered a disappointing defeat against newly promoted Hull City.

🇮🇹 Inter Milan Make Winning Start

Inter Milan began their Serie A title defence in impressive fashion with a 4-1 victory over newly promoted Monza.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu opened the scoring after just six minutes with a powerful long-range strike before Monza found an equaliser.

Inter responded strongly after the break, with Pio Esposito producing an impressive backheel finish to restore the Nerazzurri's lead.

Yann Bisseck then added a fourth, while Piotr Zieliński also got on the scoresheet as Inter secured three points in convincing fashion.

Esposito was one of the standout performers. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season and has immediately continued that form.

Inter will now look to build on their opening victory as they begin their attempt to retain the Serie A title.

🇪🇸 Mourinho Begins New Real Madrid Chapter

All eyes were also on Spain as José Mourinho prepared to take charge of his first competitive match since returning to Real Madrid.

Mourinho's return to the Santiago Bernabéu has attracted enormous attention, with the experienced manager beginning another chapter at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

His first assignment came away against Espanyol, providing an early opportunity to assess how his new-look Real Madrid side will perform under his leadership.

There will be huge expectations on Mourinho, with success expected domestically and in European competition.

🔴 Manchester United Suffer Shock Defeat

Manchester United endured a disappointing afternoon in the Premier League after losing 2-0 to newly promoted Hull City.

Hull, back in the top flight after a nine-year absence, produced an impressive performance to claim a memorable victory against the 20-time English champions.

Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored in the first half, with both goals coming from set-piece situations.

United struggled to find a response and ultimately left Hull empty-handed.

For Hull, the result represents a huge boost at the beginning of their Premier League campaign. The club had been widely tipped to face a difficult battle against relegation, but this performance demonstrated that they will not simply accept their status as underdogs.

For Manchester United, it is an early warning that there is still plenty of work to do.

⚪ Tottenham Beaten at Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur also suffered a difficult afternoon, losing 3-0 away to Brentford.

Spurs have been one of the biggest spenders in European football during the summer, investing heavily in their squad.

However, that investment did not translate into a positive result as Brentford produced a dominant performance to claim all three points.

The result will raise questions about Tottenham's start to the season and whether their new additions can quickly come together as a team.

🇫🇷 Lens Hit Five Against Auxerre

In France, Lens produced one of the day's most convincing victories, beating Auxerre 5-2.

Auxerre made life particularly difficult for themselves after conceding two penalties and being reduced to ten men.

Defender Christ Makosso was shown a straight red card in the 35th minute.

Florian Thauvin converted both penalties, while Lens added three further goals in the second half to complete a comprehensive victory.
