Harry, Meghan and a Very Different Return to Britain

There is something rather striking about the latest chapter in the story of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

After years living in the United States, Prince Harry and Meghan are preparing to return to Britain with their children. At almost exactly the same time, Meghan is reportedly in preliminary discussions about a possible acting role in Guy Ritchie's Netflix series The Gentlemen, while Harry is facing the financial consequences of another major legal defeat.

Taken individually, each story is significant. Taken together, they suggest that the Sussexes' relationship with Britain may be entering a very different phase.

A return, but not a return to royal life

It is important not to confuse Harry and Meghan's reported return with a return to working royal duties.

They stepped away from royal responsibilities in 2020 and established a new life in the United States. Their reported move back to Britain does not, at least at present, mean a return to the institution they left.

Instead, this appears to be a return to Britain on their own terms.

That distinction matters.

The Sussexes remain members of the Royal Family, but they have built an independent commercial and public identity. Their future in Britain could therefore look very different from the traditional royal model.

Meghan's potential acting comeback

The possibility of Meghan returning to acting is particularly interesting.

Sky News reports that she has held preliminary discussions about a potential role in a future season of The Gentlemen. Nothing is confirmed, and even a third season of the programme has yet to be officially announced.

Nevertheless, the prospect is significant.

Meghan was an established television actress before joining the Royal Family. Returning to scripted television would allow her to reconnect with a career that existed before her royal life.

It could also demonstrate that the Sussexes are increasingly comfortable separating their professional lives from their royal identities.

If the role eventually happens, it would be fascinating to see whether audiences view Meghan primarily as the Duchess of Sussex returning to acting — or simply as an actress taking on a new role.

Harry's legal battles remain a problem

For Harry, however, the latest headlines are considerably less positive.

The High Court has ordered Harry and six other claimants to make an initial payment of £9.54m towards the legal costs of the publisher of the Daily Mail following their defeat in the privacy case.

The judge's criticism of the claimants' conduct adds another dimension to the story.

Harry has made his battles with sections of the British press one of the defining issues of his public life. His determination to pursue these cases is understandable given his deeply held concerns about media intrusion.

But litigation has consequences.

When a case fails, the financial and reputational consequences can be substantial — and today's ruling demonstrates just how substantial they can become.

The bigger question

Perhaps the most important question is what happens next.

Harry and Meghan appear to be attempting to build a life in Britain without returning to the old royal system.

That could mean a quieter family life, Meghan developing her entertainment career, Harry continuing his charitable work and advocacy, and both maintaining their commercial interests.

But Britain is also the country where Harry's relationship with the press, his family and the institution of monarchy remains most complicated.

Their return therefore won't simply be a geographical move.

It could become a test of whether the Sussexes can establish a new relationship with Britain — one that is neither a return to royal duty nor a complete withdrawal from the country.

For Meghan, a possible acting role could provide a professional bridge back into British public life.

For Harry, the challenge may be rather different: finding a way to move forward while dealing with the financial and emotional consequences of years of legal battles.

Our view

At Real Terryo, we think it is too early to declare what the Sussexes' return will ultimately mean.

The acting story is still only at the discussion stage. The family's permanent arrangements remain unclear. And Harry's legal battle is not necessarily over simply because this particular judgment has gone against him.

But one thing is clear: the Sussex story is entering a new chapter.

For years, the central question was why Harry and Meghan left Britain.

Now the question is becoming something rather different:

What will they do now that they are coming back?

That may prove to be a much more interesting story.
