🇬🇧 WALES & LOCAL NEWS
🛒 Swansea M&S closes after nearly a decade
Swansea city centre has lost another major high street anchor as Marks & Spencer closes its doors after almost ten years.
Shoppers described the closure as a major blow, warning it could reduce footfall and leave “nothing left in the city centre.” One customer said: “It’ll kill the town altogether.”
M&S said the decision is part of a wider national strategy to reshape its store network, focusing investment on fewer, larger and more modern sites. The company insists it remains committed to Swansea and is actively exploring a new location in partnership with the council.
Local leaders say they are “disappointed” the store is closing before a replacement is secured.
🏖️ Swansea beaches hit with parking chaos and 300+ fines
Swansea Council issued over 300 penalty charge notices during a bank holiday heatwave as Caswell Bay and Langland Bay were overwhelmed by visitors.
At Caswell Bay alone, more than 90 tickets were issued in a single day for dangerous and obstructive parking. Roads were temporarily closed by South Wales Police due to safety concerns.
Officials say vehicles were blocking emergency access routes and grass verges, creating “serious risk” to public safety.
The council says it will now increase enforcement patrols throughout the summer and is urging visitors to use alternative destinations when car parks are full.
🎓 Welsh universities face £97m financial crisis
Universities across Wales are under severe financial pressure, with combined deficits rising to over £97 million.
The increase is being driven by:
falling international student numbers
rising staffing and operational costs
redundancy programmes across institutions
Despite the deficit, regulators say no university is currently at immediate risk of collapse. However, Medr (the Welsh Government education body) warns continued cuts are unsustainable.
The University of South Wales and Swansea University are among those already announcing job reductions. Staff unions warn of further job losses unless funding models change.
🧠 MS patients forced into long-distance care travel
People with multiple sclerosis in Wales are facing significant delays and travel burdens to access specialist treatment.
Some patients in north Wales report journeys of up to six hours round-trip due to limited availability of MS consultants and specialist nurses.
Charities say staffing shortages are creating a “postcode lottery” in care access, with nurse caseloads significantly above recommended levels.
Patients say travel worsens symptoms and can cause lasting fatigue. Campaigners are calling for urgent investment to provide more localised neurological care services.
🇬🇧 UK NEWS
🚗 Two jailed after fatal 130mph crash in 30 zone
Two men have been jailed for causing the death of a pedestrian after driving at extreme speeds in a built-up area.
The pair filmed themselves reaching speeds of up to 139mph in a 30mph zone while running red lights and inhaling nitrous oxide. Their vehicle struck 50-year-old Sylvester Abayomi, who was on his way to work.
The court heard they attempted to leave the scene and discussed calling an Uber before police arrived. Judges described their actions as “terrifying” and “completely avoidable.”
Both men received lengthy prison sentences for causing death by dangerous driving and related offences.
🚗 Mother and son jailed after revenge car chase
A mother and son have been jailed following a 13-mile high-speed pursuit in Essex that ended when a driver was deliberately rammed into a tree.
The court heard the incident was triggered by a false accusation involving the victim and the daughter of one of the defendants.
The pair chased the victim across multiple towns before using two vehicles to force him off the road.
The victim suffered fractures and psychological trauma. Judges said the attack was “deliberate, persistent and extremely dangerous,” stressing that “revenge is not justice.”
🌉 Severn Bridge closed after police incident
The Severn Bridge was shut for several hours following a police-led incident involving concerns for a person’s safety.
Emergency services from both Avon and Somerset Police and Gwent Police attended the scene. The situation was resolved safely and the bridge reopened later that evening.
A man was arrested on suspicion of public nuisance and a racially aggravated public order offence and taken to hospital as a precaution.
🏖️ Hundreds fined at beaches during bank holiday surge
More than 300 drivers were fined across Swansea coastal areas during a heatwave bank holiday weekend.
Illegal parking caused traffic disruption, blocked access routes, and created safety risks for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.
Council officials say enforcement will continue as visitor numbers rise heading into peak summer.

💳 Tipping culture spreading globally
A major international report suggests tipping expectations are increasing beyond the US, including in the UK and Iceland.
