Badenoch attacks Starmer over defence funding gapConservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused the government of leaving a “£5bn mess” in defence funding, claiming plans for military investment are underfunded and will leave a gap for the next Chancellor — widely expected to be Andy Burnham if he becomes Prime Minister.

The defence plan includes £15bn in investment but still faces a £4.7bn shortfall, which the Treasury says must be resolved in the autumn Budget.

Sir Keir Starmer defended the plans, accusing the Conservatives of cutting defence spending in government and insisting funding is being found through departmental efficiencies rather than extra borrowing.

UK defence strategy and budget pressure growsThe Ministry of Defence has set out plans to expand military capability, including investment in drone technology and future warfare systems. Some road schemes, including major bypass and junction projects, are already being reviewed for cancellation as part of wider savings.
