 📅 11/06/2026

From political turmoil in Westminster to unrest in Northern Ireland, major developments across Wales, and the opening of the FIFA World Cup 2026, here's your daily news round-up.

🇬🇧 Defence Secretary John Healey Resigns

One of the biggest political stories of the day saw Defence Secretary John Healey resign from Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government over disagreements surrounding military spending plans.

In a letter responding to the resignation, Sir Keir Starmer thanked Healey for his service while defending the government's defence funding strategy, insisting it would provide the resources needed to keep Britain's armed forces safe and effective.

The resignation has sparked fresh questions about divisions within government over defence spending priorities.

🚨 Northern Ireland Riots Continue For Second Night

Violence continued across parts of Northern Ireland for a second consecutive night following tensions sparked by a serious knife attack in Belfast.

Twelve police officers were injured and sixteen people arrested as masked rioters threw petrol bombs, bricks and other missiles at officers. Water cannon were deployed to disperse crowds in Belfast and Newtownabbey.

Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn condemned the disorder as "racist thuggery" and warned that a sense of fear had spread among ethnic minority communities.

The family of knife attack victim Stephen Ogilvie also condemned the violence, calling for calm while police continue their investigations.

🏥 NHS Corridor Care Figures Reveal Growing Crisis

New NHS England data has revealed that nearly 3,000 patients every day are being treated in corridors, makeshift treatment areas and other unsuitable locations due to pressure on hospitals.

The figures show an average of 2,910 patients a day experienced corridor care during May.

Patients and healthcare workers described overcrowded emergency departments, lengthy waits and conditions that some nurses compared to a "war zone".

Health leaders have described the situation as unacceptable, with ministers pledging to eliminate corridor care by 2029.

✈️ Ryanair Investigated Over Family Seating Charges

Budget airline Ryanair is facing an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over charges imposed on parents who want to sit next to their children during flights.

The watchdog is examining whether the airline's family seating policy breaches consumer law.

Ryanair has strongly denied any wrongdoing and insists its policy complies fully with aviation regulations.

The investigation forms part of wider efforts to tackle hidden costs facing consumers.

👮 Tribute Paid To Young Police Officer

Northumbria Police have paid tribute to PC Jess Turnbull, who died aged just 19 following a road traffic collision while responding to another incident.

The young officer had joined the force less than a year ago and was described as a dedicated and committed colleague with a bright future ahead of her.

A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

🔥 Historic Hare & Hounds Pub Damaged By Fire

Firefighters spent hours tackling a major blaze at the historic Hare & Hounds pub in Aberthin near Cowbridge.

The Michelin-starred venue, which dates back more than 300 years, saw smoke pouring from its windows as crews from across South Wales battled the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.

The pub has become one of Wales' most celebrated dining destinations and many residents will be hoping the landmark can be restored.

🛫 Cardiff Airport Passengers Endure Long Delays

Passengers travelling from Cardiff Airport to Faro faced a frustrating nine-hour delay after a pilot sickness issue left hundreds stranded.

Families described overcrowded conditions and poor communication while waiting for a replacement aircraft and crew.

Airport officials apologised for the disruption and confirmed assistance was provided to affected passengers.

⚽ World Cup 2026 Kicks Off In Mexico

Football fans around the world are preparing for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Hosts Mexico face South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City following an opening ceremony featuring performances from Shakira, Burna Boy, Tyla and J Balvin.

The tournament marks the start of a month-long football festival across North America.

Ammanford Nursery School will close this summer despite strong opposition from parents and community members.

Meanwhile, the Welsh Government announced a £20,000 incentive for graduates training to become teachers in shortage subjects including Welsh, mathematics and science.

In Powys, councillors expressed concern after home-schooling numbers rose to 473 pupils, prompting calls for further investigation into why families are choosing alternative education routes.

⚖️ Court And Crime Headlines

A number of significant court cases were reported today:

🔹 A convicted paedophile, Joshua Camplin, received a seven-year extended sentence after arranging to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old boy for sex.
