Death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and able to speak nearly a week after a failed execution in Tennessee left her critically ill, according to her attorneys.

Pike, 50, survived an execution attempt at a prison in Nashville on 30 September after she was administered two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital.

She was subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Her attorneys said Tuesday that Pike had initially required a ventilator but is now conscious and speaking.

Recovery remains uncertain

In a statement, Pike's legal team said her recovery was medically unprecedented and that her prognosis remained unclear.

They said they expected her recovery to be a lengthy process.

Pike continues to receive medical care and has suffered what her attorneys described as severe damage to her arms.

They said she remains handcuffed to her hospital bed.

Her attorneys also expressed their gratitude to first responders and medical staff who treated her following the failed execution.

Independent review launched

The Tennessee Department of Correction is facing an independent review following the failed execution.

Former US Attorney Ed Stanton has been appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the execution attempt and the department's handling of the procedure.

The review is expected to examine what happened during the execution and why the process did not proceed as planned.

The case has drawn significant attention because Pike survived an execution that was intended to end her life.

Pike remains on death row

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Tennessee.

She has spent decades on death row.

The failed execution has raised questions about the procedures used by Tennessee authorities to carry out capital punishment and the medical consequences of an unsuccessful execution.

For now, however, Pike remains under medical care while her attorneys await further information about her condition and long-term recovery.

Her legal position following the failed execution is also expected to remain the subject of further court proceedings.

A case now under scrutiny

The independent investigation will be closely watched as authorities seek to establish exactly what happened during the execution attempt.

For Pike's family, attorneys and supporters, the immediate focus remains her medical condition.

Her attorneys said she is now conscious and speaking, but warned that her prognosis remains uncertain.

The independent review into the failed execution is continuing.
