Celebrating the pastime of pot on April 20th has been going on since the 1970s. According to CNN, 420 originated with “the Waldos,” a group of high schoolers at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California, in the early ’70s. The Waldos would meet each other after school at 4:20 p.m. to get high. They used “420” as a codeword to reference their pot smoking in front of their unsuspecting parents and from there, the term took off.
CNN reports that Dead Heads (those who followed the band, The Grateful Dead) spread the 420 term throughout California. The state’s medical marijuana program is even bill #420 in the California Senate.
