Life has a way of prompting quiet questions that linger in our hearts: Why am I here? What is my purpose? Sometimes, these questions come in moments of stillness, other times amid the noise and chaos of everyday life. In this reflection, I explore that timeless search for meaning, inspired by the introspective tones of Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?, and grounded in the wisdom of the Bible. This is not just an exploration of purpose, but a journey of understanding how our experiences, relationships, and faith can guide us toward the reason for which we were made.
There are moments in life when we pause and wonder: Why am I here? What is my purpose? Billie Eilish’s haunting song What Was I Made For? captures this quiet, searching feeling. It is a question that resonates deep within the soul, echoing the very human longing to understand why God made us, what unique path He has set before us, and how we fit into His grand plan.
In the Bible, we are reminded of this calling. Psalm 139:13-14 tells us, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Every life is intentional, crafted by God’s hands, and filled with meaning—even when we cannot see it ourselves. Like the voice in Billie’s song, we sometimes feel fragile, unsure, or lost, yet the truth remains: God does not make mistakes.
Reflecting on my own life, I see God’s presence in both the joys and struggles I have faced. From growing up with disabilities to the experiences of learning, connecting with others, and helping in small ways, each moment has shaped the person I am today. The times of doubt, loneliness, and uncertainty have all been shaping forces.
They remind me of James 1:2-4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” These experiences, though sometimes painful, are reminders that God’s plan is not always immediately clear, but it is always perfect.
Billie’s song speaks to the vulnerability of not knowing, the feeling of searching for a place in the world where one truly belongs. It mirrors my own questions and prayers to God—moments when I feel unsure of my path, yet hope and faith gently pull me forward. I recall quiet nights reflecting on life, wondering if I was making a difference or if I was on the right path. Through prayer and reflection, I have come to understand that these questions are not a sign of weakness, but rather a heart seeking God’s direction. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Trusting God, even when the answers are unclear, is part of understanding why I was made and how I am called to live.
Purpose is also discovered in service, in how we love and impact the lives of others. Even in small acts of kindness— such as listening, supporting, encouraging, or simply being present—purpose reveals itself. Each encounter, each connection, can become a way of reflecting God’s love. Purpose is found not in recognition or achievement, but in the gentle ways we care for others, offer empathy, and make life a little brighter for those around us.
Upon closer examination, I realise how my faith, personal experiences, and reflections intersect to shape my purpose. Every challenge, every joyful moment, every quiet reflection is a thread in the tapestry that God is weaving. Romans 8:28 reminds me, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Nothing is wasted, nothing meaningless; every step, every encounter, every challenge is woven into the plan God has for me.
Even in moments when I question my path, I am reminded of the ways God has guided me before. From the encouragement of family and friends, to the small moments of clarity and connection, God’s hand has been evident. Each experience reinforces that purpose is often revealed gradually, through patience, faith, and openness to His call.
Ultimately, What Was I Made For? is not a question meant to be answered quickly. It is a journey, a dialogue with God, and a lifelong reflection. It is a prayer of openness, a recognition that our lives are sacred, and that every day brings new opportunities to discover, grow, and live intentionally. In moments of uncertainty, I turn to Him, trusting that His purpose is far greater than my understanding and that, step by step, I am being guided to the life He designed me to live.
Billie’s song reminds me that it is okay to feel uncertain. The questions, the doubts, and the searching are all part of our human experience and our walk with God. Through these moments, we learn patience, faith, and the beauty of trusting in the One who created us. And in that trust, I find peace, knowing that God’s plan is perfect, and my purpose, though sometimes hidden, is unfolding exactly as He intended.
